Murray-Calloway County Clash Tops Area High School Cage Card Tonight
By Jerry Atkins, Sun-Democrat Sports Editor
Barring snow or ice or flu epidemics or whatever else should arise to haunt the high school basketball scene, 34 action-filled contests will be played throughout the area this weekend.
Murray High’s top-ranked Tigers and a resurged Calloway County quint will collide in Murray in a classic Fourth District showdown, which highlights a 24-game card set for tonight.
Murray, the number one team in the First Region for the past several weeks, will be going for its second win of the season against the Lakers, who were chosen by area coaches as the pre-season favorite to win it all.
The Tigers have won eight in a row and 14 out of their last 15 games to claim a sparkling 17-2 record.
But the Lakers, a first-half season flop, have put together a longer winning streak. Calloway has won 10 in a row since a Dec.28 setback to St. Mary. And, included in that string are six wins over teams that rank among the top ten quints in the First Region.
Third-ranked Mayfield and No. 9 rated South Marshall clash in the only other top ten clash in Western Kentucky tonight. The Cardinals, who have bettered Calloway County’s victory string with 11 consecutive triumphs, defeated the Rebels, 77-57, in the first meeting between the two rivals a month ago. South Marshall has lost four in a row to drop to 13-13.
